Shuja Malik

Shuja is a seasoned South Asia analyst, with an extensive background in research and data driven policy analysis. He brings to the table a proven track record of quantifiable successes, with a professional background ranging across multiple industries, including development consulting, education reform, academic research and journalism.

Shuja is an experienced, multilingual digital journalist with nearly 10 years of experience covering one of the most complex and turbulent regions in Asia for the BBC. The post-2007 rise and fall in domestic terrorism in Pakistan, the country’s first ever peaceful transition of power between democratic governments in 2013 and the proliferation of low-cost communications technologies and its impact on social mobility are just some of the remarkable developments that he has covered from the field. This work has given him a nuanced understanding of the development and geopolitical challenges in Pakistan, as well as across Asia and the developing world.

Previously, Shuja was the South Asia Fellow at New America, a public policy think tank in Washington, D.C., working on its international security program. He also served as the coeditor of the South Asia Channel at ForeignPolicy.com. In Pakistan, Shuja has worked with numerous international donors and was the consultant author for USAID’s Pakistan Conflict Fragility Assessment in 2016-17.

Earlier in his career, Shuja spent three years working as research associate on a qualitative research project that analyzed the decision-making process of religious political parties in Pakistan confronted with conflicting obligations of participatory democracy and internal calls for implementation of Shariah law.

Shuja holds a master’s degree in international affairs and economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.
