Douglas E. Ramage

Douglas is founding managing director of BowerGroupAsia Indonesia in Jakarta and has over 30 years’ experience in Indonesia. Fluent in Indonesian and an expert on Indonesian political economy, business and regulatory affairs, Douglas works with multinational companies and the Indonesian government to find solutions to regulations that reduce Indonesia’s competitiveness, restrict foreign investment opportunities or hinder market entry.

Leading a large team of Indonesian policy and sector specialists, Douglas designs strategies, creates on-the-ground implementation plans and advocates on behalf of clients to achieve their core business objectives. He has helped companies overcome business and reputational challenges in Indonesia across diverse sectors, including healthcare, financial services, information technology, fast moving consumer goods, energy, agriculture and heavy industry. He is particularly adept at helping companies craft advocacy efforts so that client companies meet government expectations in ways that are simultaneously commercially viable and help advance Indonesia’s growth and development.

Douglas currently serves as vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia. He previously worked in several senior Indonesia-based roles, including in the Australian development program (AusAID), the World Bank and The Asia Foundation. His publications have included Indonesia as a Normal Country (coauthor), Australian Strategic Policy Institute, 2008; “A Reformed Indonesia?” Australian Financial Review, October 2007; and Politics in Indonesia: Democracy, Islam and the Ideology of Tolerance (Routledge, London, 1995).

Douglas holds a PhD from the University of South Carolina, and has also studied at the Australian National University, the University of Maryland and the Institute for Teacher Training (IKIP) in Malang, Indonesia. His academic career has included stints at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Singapore, Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta, the East-West Center and the University of Hawaii.
