Douglas E. Ramage

Doug is the founding managing director of BowerGroupAsia Indonesia in Jakarta. He is one of the foremost experts on Indonesia’s political economy, business and regulatory affairs, with over 30 years’ experience living and working in the country. In addition to his role at BGA, Doug serves as chair of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Indonesia, the country’s largest international business association.
Doug works closely with multinational companies and the government to find solutions to policies that impact Indonesia’s competitiveness, foreign investment opportunities and market access. He is skilled at leading teams to develop commercially strategic advocacy efforts that align with government expectations and contribute to Indonesia’s development. He has provided valuable guidance to leading organizations across a broad range of sectors, helping them overcome significant business and reputational challenges.
Doug previously held senior Indonesia-based positions at the World Bank and The Asia Foundation. He has an extensive academic career, with roles at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta, the East-West Center and the University of Hawaii. He is the author of “Politics in Indonesia: Democracy, Islam and the Ideology of Tolerance” (Routledge, London, 1995 and 1997), coauthor of “Indonesia as a Normal Country” (Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Canberra, 2008) and has written numerous articles and book chapters on Indonesia.
Doug received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and is fluent in Indonesian.
