BGA’s India team, led by Managing Director Ratan Shrivastava, wrote an update on India’s 2023 presidency of the Group of Twenty (G-20) and the implications for the development for clients and other stakeholders.

Context

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi took charge of the Group of 20 (G-20) presidency from President Joko Widodo following Indonesia’s G-20 Summit in Bali, declaring that India’s G-20 leadership will be inclusive, action-oriented and decisive. India will officially assume the presidency from December 1, 2022, till November 30, 2023.
  • During its tenure, India is expected to host more than 225 meetings in 56 cities cutting across the three workstreams: the finance track, the sherpa track and the engagement groups. The G-20 Leaders’ Summit, which will feature heads of state and government from member-countries, is scheduled to be held from September 9-10, 2023, in New Delhi.

Significance

  • India’s G-20 agenda will continue building on key action items from Indonesia’s G-20 presidency while introducing new focus areas of importance to India. Discussions will revolve around inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth, Lifestyle for Environment, women’s empowerment, digital public infrastructure and tech-enabled development. They will also focus on climate financing, circular economy, global food and energy security, green hydrogen, disaster risk reduction and resilience, developmental cooperation, multilateral reforms and combating economic crimes.
  • India’s leadership comes amid a period that has spotlighted the voices of significant major powers and their role in the international system. New Delhi will be supported by a troika comprised of Indonesia, the G-20’s previous president, and Brazil, the grouping’s next president.

Implications

  • The G-20 chairmanship will provide India with the opportunity to showcase the country. During its tenure, India is expected to host more than 225 meetings in 56 cities cutting across the three parallel workstreams: the finance track, the sherpa track and the engagement groups. The G-20 Leaders’ Summit, which will feature heads of state and government from member-countries, is scheduled to be held from September 9-10, 2023, in New Delhi.
  • Clients should monitor upcoming engagements as they could affect issues of interest. The government of India has scheduled multiple meetings between December 2022 and February 2023 under the finance and sherpa tracks. The sherpa track has 12 events planned until February 2023 on health, digital economy, education, energy, employment, tourism, environment and climate. The finance track has nine events planned until February 2023 on financial inclusion, infrastructure, sustainable finance and international financial architecture.
