The BGA India Team led by Managing Director Ratan Shrivastava, wrote an update to clients on the impacts of India’s new National Logistics Policy (NLP).

Context

  • The policy looks to improve India’s Logistics Performance Index ranking to be among the top 25 countries by 2030 and create an efficient, data-driven logistics ecosystem. 
  • This interdisciplinary, inter-jurisdictional framework cuts across multiple sectors and is considered by analysts to be a game-changer for the Indian economy.

Significance

  • The NLP’s implementation will improve the competitiveness of Indian goods in domestic and export markets, improve efficiency across various sectors and increase domestic value-added services. This will strengthen India’s position as a manufacturing destination, facilitate greater integration into global value chains, allow the country to snare a higher share of global trade and accelerate economic growth.
  • The NLP will increase the ease of doing business across industries, provide a boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, improve India’s trade competitiveness and boost exports. The plan would also work toward meeting the country’s ambitious climate change targets.

Implications

  • Companies should keep an eye on the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade workshop series with industry stakeholders to better understand the NLP’s specific advantages to their sector. The department has identified specific projects for enhancing last-mile connectivity and is working with state governments to formulate development plans.
  • Companies that manufacture, trade and sell goods in India, or are investing in infrastructure projects in the country are expected to benefit directly from reduced costs and increased efficiency thanks to the new policy.
