Matthew Nathan

Matthew specializes in natural resource; climate change; and environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies in Indonesia. He provides insights and delivers recommendations to help companies strengthen their strategic positioning within Indonesia’s political economy. His expertise is focused on mining and smelter development, energy transition, ESG reporting and sector-specific climate policies.
Matthew’s extensive experience gives him a deep understanding of corporate needs and policy dynamics, including local-level policymaking, particularly in natural resource management. He helps leading businesses navigate Indonesia’s complex regulatory landscape while addressing their unique investment priorities.
Before joining BGA, Matthew was a lawyer at one of Indonesia’s leading and fastest-growing law firms. He played a key role in facilitating critical due diligence projects and transactions across industries such as coal, nickel, forestry, renewable energy and carbon trading.
Matthew holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Universitas Indonesia. During his studies, he co-authored a paper on climate change litigation in Indonesia, which was presented at an international environmental law conference and published in a leading environmental law journal.
